I’m actually a very light packer compared to Chapel. There are only a few things I over pack: books and art supplies. I’m always afraid I’ll run out of things to draw with while I’m on a trip. The last time I went on a trip, to Hawaii over Christmas, I had to decide which of the novels I received as presents I wanted to bring. I ended up devouring Haruki Murakami’s 1Q84 and several novels from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. My favorite Discworld mini-series are the ones about the Ankh-Morpork City Watch. I was overjoyed when I found out the BBC is making a miniseries based off the Watch of the books.

Are you an over packer like Chapel or a light packer like I am? What are things you absolutely must have on a trip?
Rbuy_book_plain
I am a light packer, but I MUSTHAVEBOOKSOMG. I'm a big Pratchett fan, I like the Watch (CarrotxAngua forever) But my favorites are the ones with Death and his granddaughter Susan. I re-read Hogfather every Christmas
Raye: Daughter of Hades 3/8/13
Carrot and Angua are ADORABLE! I really enjoy the Watch books, but I have to agree with you that I love the ones with Death and Susan, too -- mostly because Susan is SO cool and Death is just hilarious. The Watch is one of my favorites, but sadly, the movie adaptation didn't live up to the book.

I am an light packer, since I basically wear jeans or pajamas every day. And I CANNOT go anywhere without at least three good books, preferably new ones.
ilovepie81 3/6/13
I understand the feeling! Books can quickly fill up a suitcase.
 Emma  3/8/13

I was much like this last week.
10/12/12
Me again.
That was predictable wasn't it?
Ginny Weasley fan 10/13/12
That's okay!! And that's really funny that you were the same way...
 Emma  11/1/12

I overpack on the worst things to ever overpack: BOOKS. And usually really big hardcover ones.
Clockwork Wombat 10/5/12

Ellie 10/4/12
Yes, that's fine!
 Emma  11/1/12

Didn't they do Color of Magic, Hogfather and Going Postal? I've only seen Hogfather (Color of Magic was boring and I can't find Going Postal...
CJ 10/4/12
They did do Color of magic and Hogfather...I don't believe Going Postal's out yet. Neither Color of Magic nor Hogfather were very high-quality, though, sadly...
 Emma  11/1/12

Could you make the deadline like the 20th?

Miss L.S.P 10/3/12
No, of course not! You can totally reference my Chapel drawings. Keep in mind that I'll be judging the submissions on "most creative," though, so make sure to add a personal touch if you can!
 Emma  10/3/12
Oh and we can use more than one medium, right? Sorry I'm do anxious...
Miss L.S.P 10/3/12
Yes, of course! All you have to do is draw Chapel, anything else is up to you :)
 Emma  10/3/12

Hi Emma! I am looking into getting a wacum tablet and i was wondering if you had any sugestions for the one you like the best and/or your favorite?
coco 9/29/12
I think I remember seeing an intuos 3 in the video of her drawing one of the comics she had. If you are just starting and have never used a tablet before, I would recommend either the Bamboo Create or the Bamboo Connect. If you find you like the tablet you may want to consider getting a higher end one that is larger, but I think the price doesn't warrant that at first.
blaidd gwael 9/30/12
Ok, thanks. What about the Bamboo splash?
coco 9/30/12
I'm not 100% familiar with the Bamboo line since my previous tablet was a really old junky one, but from what I've heard, anything from the Bamboo line is good! (Anyone want to add?)
 Emma  9/30/12
Thank you guys! This is very helpfull!
coco 9/30/12
Well, I hope I helped you make a decision and I wish you luck with whatever you decide to get.
blaidd gwael 9/30/12
:)
coco 10/2/12
Basically, If you have never used a tablet before get one that is cheap and small. The entire bamboo product line matches that description.

The Bamboo line is Wacom's introductory product line which makes it a pretty good choice for people who have not used a tablet before or who want to get into digital work. The next level up is the Intuos product line and the Intuos tablets are used by professionals in many graphic design fields.

The bamboo create is a larger version of the bamboo connect. Both the bamboo capture and the bamboo create are "fully functional" tablets in that they use both multitouch and a pen for input. The other bamboo tablets don't have multitouch (which btw I never actually use and I don't think it is worth it). All of the bamboo tablets except for the create are the same size and I don't believe there is a significant difference between the connect and splash at least not in the hardware.

The only difference between the connect and splash that I am capable of discerning is the software they come with. I would recommend getting the splash which comes with ArtRage and then I would recommend that you download Autodesk Sketchbook Express, which is free. It would appear that ArtRage is not.

Please take this recommendation with a grain of salt I have not actually used the Bamboo splash.

On the subject of software, If you do not have a lot of money to go buy the adobe creative suite (I don't), GIMP is a good, free alternative. As for drawing or painting, I personally tend to draw and paint in Sketchbook Express, because I prefer the way it allows for the organic resizing of the brush and scaling and moving around the picture. I also prefer the brush dynamics of Sketchbook Express over GIMP and even Photoshop. You will, however, have to make that choice for yourself. :)

Tablets take some time to get used to. Don't expect to be able to draw just as well with a tablet as you can with a pencil and paper if that is what you have been doing. Once you do get used to using a tablet there is a lot that you can do digitally that is significantly harder to do otherwise.

BTW: Emma, which intuos do you use?
blaidd gwael 9/30/12
That's great advice! Another good program is Paint Tool SAI, which is available for free (I believe) and is on par with Photoshop. In fact, it does some things BETTER than Photoshop -- the only downside is it's not available for Mac. So I don't use it!

I use the Intuos 4! I really love it because the shortcut buttons make drawing with it incredibly fluid and easy, plus the pen nibs and surface quality are better than the cheaper-end Wacom tablets. Still, it doesn't really matter for one's first tablet!
 Emma  9/30/12
Have you ever used a Cintiq before? It's a lot like the Intuous line, except it's got an LCD screen and a bunch of other stuff built in. It's really cool, but also crazy expensive x.x
evilrizwiz 10/2/12
Ah, thanks. I can't seem to do anything so far and I'm glad to hear others have the same prob.
doodlefox 10/8/12
Yes, good advice! That's basically what I said as well.
 Emma  9/30/12
Hi! I would reccommend a tablet from the Bamboo line, they're pretty light but also cheap and great for a starter tablet. I currently use a larger one called an Intuos, but I only started using it after "graduating" from a smaller and less expensive tablet. Hope that helps!!
 Emma  9/30/12
Ah... That's what I have
doodlefox 10/2/12
A bamboo thingy
doodlefox 10/2/12
Ah, how cool! Bamboos seem like good tablets, some of my friends have them!
 Emma  10/3/12
Yep. Only I'm not to good w/ it yet
doodlefox 10/8/12

I also quite liked the Watch books in the Discworld series, though I pretty much like all of them.
Also, as someone who has had to adapt t the life of a rover, I have mastered packing all I need into one back pack. Heck, when I moved to New Mexico, I had everything I needed in one backpack, and one military seven day bag. I have since gone and got a second one filled with clothing, but I can live light, not just travel light.
Miles 9/29/12
That's so cool! What an interesting way to travel. And yes, I love all the Discworld books, but I have a particular affection for the Watch series too!
 Emma  9/29/12

I haven't had much of a problem since I got my e-reader. I bring that, one sewing project to work on and whichever roll of yarn that I'm working on turning into cord. That's usually enough to keep me busy.
Marikalay 9/29/12
That sounds perfect! I knit, so I often bring that, but I can't read on e-readers as naturally as I can with a normal book.
 Emma  9/29/12
My little brother got me the Nook Tablet for christmas a couple of years ago, so I have games on it too. If I really need the distraction enough to pull it out, I usually play bejewelled or mahjong instead of actually reading.
Marikalay 10/1/12

i always pack my cloths as if i'll be away longer than i will be, but other wise i pick light.

(sigh) looks like Chapel is in for a rough time of it. going though the heavy brush will wreck anything you wear that isn't though enough. I have exprience in this, trust me.
Dr Taxil Necrobane 9/29/12
Yes, true. Hopefully, her parents will have time to dissuade her from packing TOO much!
 Emma  9/30/12

I don't usally pack to much but whenever i go camping for just one weekend i end up with a large suitcase full of stuff
coco 9/29/12
oh, and i will be sending my chapel drawing contest entry to you soon!
coco 9/29/12
I received it, it's wonderful, thank you!!
 Emma  9/30/12
Your Welcome
coco 9/30/12
Did I miss the announcement or something? At least I just found the post on Facebook, I will have to see if I can find the time to make a submission.
blaidd gwael 9/30/12
There's quite a while until the contest ends! And, you've just reminded me that I forgot to post about it here. I'll do that right now :)
 Emma  9/30/12
That's a good amount I think!
 Emma  9/30/12

I just love her obsession with hats… It's just ridiculous(ly funny)
Lady Mabelton 9/28/12
I agree ;)
coco 9/29/12
me too...
Miss L.S.P 9/29/12
Mine is probably books. I'm gonna need a second bookshelf soon!
Lady Mabelton 10/3/12
I /basically/ have 6 overflowing bookshelves in my house, although only 2 are really mine. Reading is just so much fun. ;)
blaidd gwael 10/3/12
I'm glad you think so too!!
 Emma  9/30/12
Thank you so much! Everyone in real life has an obsession like that, so I wanted to have Chapel have one, too...what's your obsession?
 Emma  9/30/12
Mine's Pokemon, mebe
doodlefox 10/2/12

I remember a couple of people here were worried about the Judge Dredd movie. I heard it was really really good.
blaidd gwael 9/28/12
it turned out to be much better than the first one.
Dr Taxil Necrobane 9/29/12
Wow, I'm so happy that it was! I haven't seen any of the related movies, but I'm just happy for you guys who had low expectations...
 Emma  9/30/12
I have also heard this. Alas, our local theater will not have it soon. =/
Miles 9/29/12
Oh, that's a shame...still, I'm glad it ended up being good since people were worried!
 Emma  9/30/12
Oh, that's very cool! Maybe I'll have to go see it!
 Emma  9/30/12

expected.....
Miss L.S.P 9/28/12
Yes, true...Chapel can be quite predictable can't she!
 Emma  9/30/12

Just in case!! :D
The Merry Lurker 9/28/12
You never know, she might NEED a top hat camping out in the wilderness!
 Emma  9/28/12

Haha, I usually pack light, but it conflicts with my desire to always have everything with me at all times.
blaidd gwael 9/28/12
I definitely know the feeling. Clothes, necessities, and extremely light entertainment. I use to pack a lot more in terms of books and notebooks, but I've learned that I usually end up socializing or doing trip related things to get benefit out of them.
evilrizwiz 9/28/12
Yes, that happens to me sometimes too! I get too caught up in the excitement of the trip to get to some of the books I pack.
 Emma  9/30/12
Ah, I see! That's a tough thing to correlate for sure.
 Emma  9/28/12
Definitely. :)
