If you remember the strip “Rupert Leads the Life of Riley,” back in Season Three, you might recognize where the idea for this comic came from. In the “Life of Riley” strip, Chapel’s mom mentions that Chapel’s biggest source of stress is trying to win hats on eBay. Ever since I wrote that line, I knew I wanted to have a comic centered around that very thing.

On online auction sites, there’s a strategy called “sniping” where people wait until the very last second of the auction to place their bid, thus ensuring that the other bidders won’t have enough time to counter-bid before the end of the auction. I thought that the double meaning of this term was perfect for one of Chapel’s flights of fancy! I wanted to do something different from her previous flights of fancy and make the atmosphere in this one very dark and gritty, like Chapel was imagining herself in a crime drama. And only Chapel would imagine all that, only to give herself water balloons as ammo!

Emma, this is amazing! I loved all your cool perspectives!! (Chapels hair flying in the wind was an awesome touch, by the way.)
Bonzelle 8/17/13
Thank you, I'm so happy you like it!
 Emma  9/20/13

1940's feather sun hat... Hahaha! Leave it to Chapel to be bidding on Ebay for hats. Although I'm one to talk, I suppose, with all of the Ebaying going on in my house...
Ginny Weasley fan 4/24/13
Haha! Yep, that sounds about right...
 Emma  4/30/13

Hi. New reader here. Your web comic is really cute :)
Marty 4/5/13
Thanks, I'm glad you like it!! And I hope you keep reading!
 Emma  4/11/13

At first i thought this was another of her board games with Fred.
lizzie 4/1/13
Nope! It would be funny if it was, though.
 Emma  4/3/13

been up 4 hours reading chapel...so worth it
Laurel 3/25/13
Aww, thank you so much!! I'm really happy that you spent that long reading my comic.
 Emma  3/29/13

I've been involved in an eBay battle before-- I was really excited because the item I was bidding on hadn't gotten any significant bids for days, then seconds before the time ran out someone jumped in and grabbed it. I was so mad, but I was able to get the same item from another seller that same day. My dad was slightly irritated too, partially because he is a stranger to the Internet and grabs any chance to complain about it, LOL.
Emily15 3/25/13
Aw, that's a bummer! At least you found it somewhere else the next day!!
 Emma  3/29/13

So i just had an idea chapel should totally dress up as batgirl Barbara Gordon and Barneby as James Gordon jr from batman
rowanrhed 3/25/13
That would be very cute.
 Emma  3/29/13

What the h-e-double toothpicks
rowanrhed 3/24/13
It's a dream sequence!
 Emma  3/29/13

 Emma  3/24/13

Bibi 3/23/13
Chapel in space would be a cute doodle for the Chapel facebook page! And thank you so much, that's really sweet of you!! :)
 Emma  3/23/13

Bibi 3/23/13
You can check the page without having an account, there's a link at the top of the page! Still, I probably won't be doing a space drawing very soon.
 Emma  3/24/13

And also my sister also collects hats like chapel
Julie 3/22/13
Wow! Maybe your sister would like this comic, since she has that in common!!
 Emma  3/23/13

Haha! Chapel but I can relate because I sometimes day dream about things inn that sorta matter ish
Julie 3/22/13
That's so great!! I daydream often, but usually about Chapel or my other characters.
 Emma  3/23/13

As much as I wish Fred was bidding for the hat, I sadly doubt that he would want a '1940s feather sun hat'!!!!
Missy 3/22/13
True -- I highly doubt that'd be something he would want!
 Emma  3/22/13
It would be funny if she tried like buying a game or something using her sniping skill, and then somehow at last minute, Fred beats her by like one cent
Miss L.S.P 3/23/13

Water balloons: the ultimate sniping weapon.

I like the change of scenery! It sets the mood well, and then...oh, she was just buying a hat.
Harrison 3/22/13
Yes, that's exactly the kind of reaction I wanted readers to have! I'm glad you like the scenery in this comic, it was fun to draw.
 Emma  3/22/13
ever been hit or tossed water balloons Miss Emma? oddly enough i never have been hit in all my years.
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 3/24/13

Ahh yes, the sniping tactic! I'm glad Chapel won!
Miss L.S.P 3/22/13
(Got the hat, won isn't exactly the correct term)
Miss L.S.P 3/22/13
No, you could say she won, too - it WAS an auction, after all!
 Emma  3/22/13
True, true
Miss L.S.P 3/23/13
Yay! After so many Fred-related losses, I think she needs to win at SOMETHING at least once...
 Emma  3/22/13

It's possible to snipe me, but I bid the most I want to pay in my initial bid.
Someone recently tried sniping for a pair of boots. I still won the auction by 35 cents. They didn't leave themselves enough time to bid a higher number. To be fair, the same person had submitted like seven other bids against mine during the course of the auction, and I never had to raise my bid once.
Chapel likes hats. I like boots. I spent Thursday morning cleaning, protecting, then polishing all of my seven pair that are currently in my possession. I think I have another half dozen or more back in California. "With the right pair of boots, you have nothing to fear."
Miles 3/22/13
That's a cool story! It seems like you're well versed in the ways of online auction sites! For me, I like buying old comic books or art magazines that are no longer in print.
 Emma  3/22/13

Miss Emma, did you draw those "Gritty" panels from memory?

Personally, i won't use Ebay. If i can't see it in person, i just can't trust it to buy it. I heard enough rip off stories about Ebay.
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 3/22/13
In the first panel I wanted the alleyway to be a very subtle reference to the TV show "Arrow," so I made it identical to the one seen in that show. Everything else was drawn 100% from memory, though. I really love drawing cityscapes, but I don't get a chance to draw them in Chapel very often!
 Emma  3/22/13

Water balloon ammo! That's my favorite kind......
Missy 3/22/13
cute but limited about of ammo. I had (and still do) a super soaker 3k. the last of the ultra powerful water guns. fully loaded and pumped up, i did stand on my front steps of my house and shoot a spray of water across my yard AND the street beyond it.
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 3/22/13
Wow, that's a very long-range water gun!
 Emma  3/22/13
they just don't make them like that any more. that is why i kept it. it was before your time Miss Emma.
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 3/22/13
Yes, us poor kids these days have to resort to making our own, to get any sort of quality.

sscentral dot org/homemade/

:)
Harrison 3/22/13
Huh, that's interesting!!
 Emma  3/22/13
Yes, I agree! :)
