Basically, I love the word “ennui.”

If you live in the Bay Area, I have some exciting news! The Los Gatos Art Museum is featuring my work as part of their “Storytelling in Pictures: From Idea to Art” exhibit. I’m the only kid featured in the museum, which is really an honor to me. The exhibit showcases my Chapel comics, development drawings, sketchbook, and more! If you want to check it out, the exhibit runs through February 24th, so you have plenty of time to come visit Chapel in a real-life gallery setting.

I’m teaching two free comic book workshops at the museum on Sunday, February 3rd and Sunday, February 10th, from 12pm to 3pm. And even better, if you’ve ever been interested in my 826 Valencia comic workshops in San Francisco but were too old to attend, the classes at the museum are open for all ages. I would LOVE to see any Chapel readers at the exhibit or at my workshops!

Ennui was one of my spelling words in school last week :)
Ginny Weasley fan 1/27/13
Oh wow, what a cool coincidence! I love the word.
 Emma  3/8/13
Emma, I don't know what ennui is.
Writer who likes real 12/31/13

I gotta ask is the girl in the picture in the background from something she kinda looks like an older chapel.
CrazyChick 1/24/13
that is probably her mother.
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 1/25/13
You're right, Taxil!
 Emma  3/8/13
It's her mother! I've shown pictures of her mother in the backgrounds of other strips as well.
 Emma  3/8/13

i was looking at your videos and noticed that you have a watercolor box which is black and i was wondering what company that was
Trix 1/24/13
It's a Windsor & Newton, but I wouldn't recommend it. I only used it in that video to get a certain color that I'd run out of on my normal Sakura Koi set!
 Emma  1/24/13
lordy, it's been awhile sense i painted with water color. if you have a steady hand, the results can be fine, other wise i stuck with acrylics paints.

maybe i should go back and make a few new paintings this year....
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 1/24/13

Barnaby is such a cutie :P
AllieKaaos 1/22/13
I know, right!
 Emma  1/24/13

I want you guys to try and guess my fave food
Trix 1/20/13
Pizza
Miss L.S.P 1/20/13
Oh, and I don't think anyone really guess what mine was
Miss L.S.P 1/20/13
Is it samosas
Trix 1/21/13
No, good guess though! I do like samosas!
My favorite food, is sushi just like Emma!
Miss L.S.P 1/21/13
my fave food is samosas
Trix 1/21/13
I have sporadic tastes, so sometimes my favorite food will be a chicken burger with bacon (like now) and sometimes it will be meat pies.
Clockwork Wombat 1/26/13

Trix 1/21/13
Hmm...
 Emma  3/8/13

Love chapel's hat!
eponine 1/20/13
Thanks -- it's a vintage-style cloche!
 Emma  1/21/13
You like Eponine too? I've been obsessed with Les Mis since I was THREE
Enjoloras 1/21/13
You remind me of my friend. :)
doodlefox 1/26/13
Do you hear the fangirls sing...
Paragrin 5/10/13

...ennui?
please forgive me as I have no idea what that means and I am too lazy to look it up.
also ULTRA-CONGRATULATIONS about the museum thing!
Clockwork Wombat 1/18/13
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you like the museum exhibit...since you live in the area, maybe you can consider dropping in? I'd LOVE to see you again, especially in a class situation.
 Emma  1/19/13
secretly I am a bit envious because I have now created a webcomic but it will probably be not as famous as yours and the first strip will not be released until tomorrow (sorry for the advertising)
Clockwork Wombat 1/18/13
Hey I'll read it if it's good maybe.
doodlefox 1/19/13
I have no doubt Chapel chronicles will eternally pwn it forever and stuff, but hey, I have never had a webcomic before. Also, I will post link when the first one actually posts tomorrow, if ppl want.
Clockwork Wombat 1/19/13
I up for it if it's okay with emma!
Miss L.S.P 1/19/13

Miss L.S.P 1/19/13

Miss L.S.P 1/19/13
also Chapel's hat is fab this week
Clockwork Wombat 1/18/13
Thank you, I'm so glad you like it!
 Emma  1/19/13
I have a hat kinda like that....
Cool coincidence.....
Missy 1/19/13

Trix 1/19/13

Clockwork Wombat 1/20/13
Can I pleeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaase have the link or just give me the name of your web comic and i search it up
Trix 1/20/13
Yeah! I would SOOOO like to know it!
Miss L.S.P 1/20/13
Miss Emma, it wouldn't be too much of a hassle to add an extra page here to put the links to the pages of your friends and fans, would it? just an idea to ponder...
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 1/21/13
I've been meaning to put up a links page for a while, but with my personal friends' comics on it who have offered to do a link exchange.
 Emma  1/21/13
I am afraid it is sort of in hiatus currently because of me missing homework assignments and having to make them up. but here is the address: frank-dave-meg-tara(dot)thecomicseries(dot)com
Clockwork Wombat 1/25/13
P.S.: sorry about the image being too large, I use a pc for my comics and I don't have photoshop, just Pixlr.
Clockwork Wombat 1/25/13
also sorry about the hiatus :[
Clockwork Wombat 1/31/13

sense you like ennui, here is a new word you might like Miss Emma.

"rehypothecated"

it very well might become important this year or next...

Dr. Taxil Necrobane 1/18/13
That's a very cool word -- does anyone else have any interesting words they'd like to share? I ALWAYS love to expand my vocabulary!
 Emma  1/19/13
I am fairly sure pretty much everyone knows this one but: "antidisestablishmentarianism"
I love that one :-)
Clockwork Wombat 1/20/13
Clockwork Wombat, your real life name must be Fred. Because it looks like you just won the last game of Scrabble with that word. gold star my friend.
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 1/20/13
Unfortunately, That isn't a legal scrabble play. . . I had the letters but not enough space once :'(

For some odd reason I've always liked "tintinnabulation," but when it comes to odd or weird words my favorite has to be "ouija".....hm I keep thinking of more odd words I like. "crwth" for example.

One of the really great things about "ouija" and "crwth" is that they have exactly five letters which means they come in handy for the word game Jotto (one of my favorite word games, like mastermind but better).
blaidd gwael 1/22/13
sphygmomanometer, deoxyribonucleic acid and cumulonimbus
Silver 2/1/13

too sad that I don't live in the area otherwise I would have gone
Trix 1/18/13
Oh, that's a shame! :( Where do you live? I go to conventions in various places around the country, so maybe we'll cross paths one day...
 Emma  1/18/13
i would love to go as well, but i don't think you'll be showing up on the east coast any time soon. so just seeing pics or if someone youtube it will have to do for the rest of us.
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 1/18/13
Well, actually, that's not true! I have done conventions in NYC before, and I may be going to one in Michigan this summer but nothing is set in stone yet :)
 Emma  1/19/13
For some reason I keep thinking you're in Virginia, but I'm not really sure why.
blaidd gwael 1/22/13
canada
Tric 1/19/13
Oh, well, there is a very important comics convention in Toronto but I haven't gone there yet. Maybe someday!
 Emma  1/19/13
I live in the west :(
Trix 1/19/13
Yellow knife?
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 1/21/13
no
Trix 1/21/13

Love chapel's expression in panel 2!! I also like how you did her side view in panel 1! Congrats about the class and museum!! That's sounds awesome!!
Miss L.S.P 1/18/13
Thanks, I'm really glad you like her expressions here -- I wanted to make them especially nice to show her reactions!

I'm really excited about the classes and the museum! I know it's a long way for you, but if you're ever in the Los Gatos area, please consider dropping in!!
 Emma  1/18/13
Is Los Gatos near SF?
doodlefox 1/19/13
It's a 50 minute drive from San Francisco
 Emma  1/19/13
Wow that's close to me!
doodlefox 1/26/13
Maybe! That would be great!
Miss L.S.P 1/19/13

looks like the Hedgehog might need to go to the vet. just telling him that might make the ennui go away. ;-)
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 1/18/13
oh yea, Congrats Miss Emma for getting into that art museum! and you're the only youngen' to do it too!

You're teaching classes now too? hoo boy, i hope you'll have help with you to do that. do you have any idea how many people will attend your class Miss Emma? will we be able to see some pics of you in your educational glory after ward for the rest of us who can't attend?
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 1/18/13
Thank you so much Taxil, that REALLY means a lot to me!!

This isn't the first class I've taught, though -- I've taught about seven other comics courses to kids, some without a TA, and never had any problems! I've got my curriculum down to an exact science now, too. I'm not sure how many people will be attending, I believe it's a "however many people show up" situation.

I already have pictures from the workshops I've taught previously, but I'll be sure to take more at this event as well :)
 Emma  1/18/13
now that i think about it, if comic making doesn't pan out for you Miss Emma, you could try to get a teaching career. You have indeed started seriously teaching earlier than anyone i have ever heard of, and that is saying a lot out of me.
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 1/18/13
Aww, thank you so much Taxil! I find that I get along with kids of all ages really naturally...I've never had problems teaching a class even when the kids are being rowdy or having trouble focusing. I love teaching a lot, and I'm honored that I've been invited to teach classes at places like this museum and the 826 Valencia nonprofit!

While I hope I can make comics as a life-time career, I also hope I can always teach classes too as it's something I find very fulfilling and rewarding.
 Emma  1/18/13
It is good to hear you have a career goal so early in life. But life rarely goes the way you want it, so it is good to have back up plans ready.
Dr. Taxil Necrobane 1/18/13
Yes, I'm a big believer in always having a back-up plan -- you never know what'll happen!
 Emma  1/19/13
Haha, it certainly would! Sunny likes the vet, though, so I guess not all pets hate their check-ups...
 Emma  1/18/13

I like that word to hard to pronounce but worth it
Yarin 1/18/13
Yes, it's definitely a worthwhile word to know -- I love it!
