What do you think, flapper or slapper?
Flapper, you look lovely.

You've got a hat box?
Planet of the Hats, I'm ready!
CJ 7/13/12 responder

Star Trek poster with Spock, yes! :)
5/16/12 responder

i totally hoard stone soup mags and notebooks.
4/21/12 responder
I LOVE Stone Soup. Maybe instead of commenting on here I should be editing that story I want to submit to it... hmmmmmm.

I hoard rocks.

Me: Rock! PREETTYYY.

Also, Chapel, I just wanted to invite you to a 1920's period party... hope you can make it!
7/6/12 responder

Apparantly, my family has the first book of Cardcaptor Sakura! I was pretty surprised.. I read some of it and I have to say that those cards actually look really nice.
4/19/12 responder
Oh wow, really? That's so cool! You should definitely keep up with the series!
4/19/12 responder
yeah, maybe I will
4/19/12 responder

So any reason there is a Star Trek poster above Chapel's bed?
4/19/12 responder
Well...because she likes Star Trek!
4/19/12 responder
Star trek is ok, but i prefure star wars myself.
4/19/12 responder
I like star wars... but i actually have never seen star trek.
5/3/12 responder
I like Twilight Zone, the series. Haven't seen the movie yet, but I have a book that explains all the episodes.

P.S. If you want to see the show, it is on at 10 on Me-TV [channel]
7/6/12 responder
10 at night. Sorry for being so general. :)
7/6/12 responder
I assumed that. but do you?
4/20/12 responder

How many hats does she have, anyways? I wonder if I can compete with her, I have 40 or so.

By the way, I love your comics. I don't even remember how I stumbled upon Chapel, but I adore her quirky personality. You are very good at keeping her personality the same, is she based off anyone?

Please never stop :)
Layna 4/17/12 responder
Wow. what a number of hats.
4/18/12 responder
I know, right? What a cool collection it must be!
4/18/12 responder
I get most of them from the Farmer's Market in my town, and from vintage and second-hand stores. It's more fun that way, then they are unique!
I have a sailor hat, mushroom hats, hats from the 30's, big floppy hats, one knitted hat, a duct tape hat,one with a feather sticking out, a top hat-ish thing (I call it my Mad Hatter Hat!) and quite a few more. I also have some from the Farmer's Market that are made from old clothes, so they're quite funky :)
Layna 4/18/12 responder
Wow, 40 is quite a lot! The number of hats Chapel has isn't strictly defined, I imagine she's always buying new ones. She has however many hats you imagine her to have!

Awww, I'm so glad you like Chapel's character so much! She's not based on anybody, no. Sometimes things she does will be slightly based on things I've seen people do in real life, but her character is entirely invented.
4/18/12 responder
That must be hard to maintain, then. I applaud you entirely, I know that I personally struggle with maintaining a character of complete invention!

Yes, I have quite a bit. I love love love hats! It's one of my addictions, but then we have five or six wardrobes filled with costumes at my house, too. :)
Layna 4/18/12 responder
Wow, five or six wardrobes? Are you in the theater at all? That's so fascinating! I'd love to hear more about your collection!
4/19/12 responder
I do theater, yes, but that's not what the costumes are for. My mom owns a party business and she throws themed parties- birthday, retirement, anything! I work for her as a Character Worker, so I dress up and interact with the guests in character.

Basically it's like one giant interactive play and we have seven foot canvas backdrops to complete the scene!

My favorite costume is my fairy costume, but mad science is a close second! We also have Elizabethan (that was made for and English project in school), Renaissance, Knight, Pirate, Mermaid, Spa Assistant, Nurse, Scientist, Bunny, Fairy, Doll, Cinderella (raggy dress with ball gown under)and all the princesses, Bollywood, Elf, Witch/Wizard, and more. We offer most of these as themes, plus ones where costumes aren't needed :)
4/21/12 responder

Emma, I read a lot of webcomics every week and I am happy to find what that is well written, amazingly drawn, really funny and safe to show my younger cousins and parents. I hope you keep this going for a good long while!
Xander 4/15/12 responder
Thank you so much, what a sweet comment! I'm really glad to hear that you enjoy Chapel that much, and I'm flattered you showed it to your cousins. I'll definitely keep it going for a long time, and I hope you keep reading!

I collect Maneki Neko (those waving Japanese cats) and really anything cute and/or tiny and/or Japanese. ^^
4/14/12 responder
Oh, I love those waving Japanese cats, they're adorable! What other cute Japanese things do you collect? For a while, a lot of people at my school collected those Japanese erasers that are in the shape of different things...
4/16/12 responder
Oh! I totally know those! They are SO adorable!
4/17/12 responder
Japanese erasers are fun. :)
recently my grandpa brought back this big box of weird treats from an airport in Japan. I obsess over the packaging of EVERYTHING and refuse to throw out the wrappers because they're so pretty.
4/17/12 responder
oh, just remembered something else!
I just started a collection of other people's things I find in library books. Anyone else do that?
I'm always super excited when i find something...so far what I have is this really cool b&w photo and a bookmark someone made by laminating some really cool old stamps (from Russia, I think.)
4/17/12 responder
I don't collect things I find in library books, really -- mostly because I have a weird compulsion to always own my books instead of getting them from the library -- but I do collect random papers I find on the street! Anything that people have written and left behind, I'll take. Those sound like amazing finds though! I also collect antique welder's glasses, bottlecaps, bad amateur art, records, and One Piece collectibles.
4/18/12 responder
Oh my gryffindor ME TOO! Well, the owning books part - i HATE library books for some reason. I always likew to leave my own marks on books - to see how worn the've become through reading them so often, to remember fond times reading them...my Order of the Phoewnix is SO messed up, because in seventh grade last year I shoved that huge paperback into my backpack every day for, like, a week lol ;)
But i used to collect quarters! Now, I guess you could say I collect posters of my interests...my hangout room has, like twenty billion Harry Potter and Hunger Games posters in it ;)
And my room's got One Direction. lol i've caught the Direction Infection <33333
4/18/12 responder
lol Order of the Phoewnix wthufflepuff, self???
4/18/12 responder
Oh, I LOVE Japanese packaging! Whenever I order my manga or Japanese collectibles, everything's so beautifully wrapped, I just have to save the packaging too.
4/18/12 responder
I know, aren't they? My favorites are the ones shaped like miniature food!
4/17/12 responder
I love the panda and frog ones!
4/18/12 responder
Those are really cute, too. They used to be really popular among my friends, but none of my friends really use them too much anymore (I don't either, to be honest, but I still love them).
4/18/12 responder
I don't actually use them as erasers... :P
4/18/12 responder
I think they're too cute!
4/20/12 responder
I use those Japanese erasers to get in tiny spots when I draw my comic, Modge Podge. Isn't the paintbrush you used for those illustrations in stone soup created by Japanese and/or made in Japan? I have that brush to. I love it!
4/18/12 responder
I don't really use those erasers in my drawings, but it's SO cool that you do! Yes, my favorite type of watercolor paintbrush (for others who may not know what we're talking about) is a Japanese type that has a plastic well for holding water incorporated into the very barrel of the brush. Isn't it so great?
4/18/12 responder
Yes yes yes! It is sooo nice not to have to bring a cup of water to where you are painting!
4/19/12 responder

It's ok Chapel, we love you still :)
and oh my gosh! The new Chapel intro is so awesome. "Vacuums have bags of dirt inside them! I found an awesome hat and changed the sign to dogs ON biciycles! Bye!"
Ahahahahhaha.
4/14/12 responder
Oh man, I'm REALLY glad you like the new intro! I worked really hard on it and I'm really pleased that people have enjoyed it so far. I thought it was a pretty funny way of getting to know Chapel!
4/16/12 responder

I don't really hoard anything, but I collect paint chips (paint samples), and business cards!
4/14/12 responder
Paint chips? What an interesting thing to collect! Do you pick up free paint chips from Home Depot or something like that? And I know some people who collect business cards, so that's really cool that you do, too!
4/16/12 responder
I don't understand the paint chips unless you want them as a color sample. But i do understand the business cards. the cards are slowly becoming a lost art. it's a shame.
4/17/12 responder
Have you ever been to the Maker Faire? It's really awesome and people make THE coolest things... you can also find a lot of different business cards....
4/18/12 responder
I love the Maker Faire so much! Wait, Miss LSP, does that mean you live in the Bay Area?
4/18/12 responder
Yes :)
4/18/12 responder
you two should meet up some time. although a part of shudders at the possiable zany chaos the two of you could make. :-P
4/18/12 responder
haha! I have to admit, that might be true! I CAN be VERY CRAZY! :P
4/19/12 responder
I love business cards! I always have tons of fun designing Chapel business cards to take with me when I exhibit at conventions.
4/18/12 responder

I collect cook books, well books in general. But by far the majority are cook books. I did gradate culinary school. It doesn't make up for it but it's a good excuse.
4/14/12 responder
Oh wow, you graduated culinary school? That's definitely a reason to collect cookbooks! I collect normal books, too, but I'm not much of a chef -- unlike you it would seem!
4/16/12 responder
I learned to do what i can cook from my grandma, but at least my farther taught me to make corn bread.
4/17/12 responder
That's the best way to cook. Learning from family. Or from the sweet little old lady across the way. My Grandma was the one to encourage me to go to school for cooking.
4/20/12 responder
I learned by making a lot of mistakes. And burning a lot of food. I love reading any how. What is your favorite book?
4/20/12 responder

Haha! This is great. So... You know those half bookshelves with about three shelves in them, that fit under windows? I have three of them, and a window sill, FILLED with rocks, minerals and fossils. I'm pretty sure that qualifies as hoarding :P

By the way, I aspire to be a geologist writer... so... I like rocks :)

This also reminds me- I think everyone is a little OCD about something. For me, it's marker caps. If the wrong colour marker caps are on the wrong marker, it REALLY bothers me. Do you have one of those too?
Allie 4/14/12 responder
That's so cool that you want to be a geologist! I used to collect rocks to a lesser extent in that I just picked up any ones I found interesting, but I never got such a cool collection as you have!

I'm not OCD about marker caps, but I am about other things. For example the dust jackets on books! If the top of the dust jacket isn't flat in line with the top of the book cover, say if it's ticking up a bit, I get really annoyed and have to fix it right away. What about anyone else? What are your OCD tendencies?
4/16/12 responder
oh gosh....i am SO OCD about toast. i have to butter it RIGHT when it pops out of the toaster and i freak out if i forget about it and it gets cold...yeah. :D
4/17/12 responder
Huh, that's cool! I'm not OCD about toast at all, mostly because I don't eat it too much. I've been eating it more lately though since we started backing our own bread each week...
4/18/12 responder

This is by FAR the funniest yet.. Great work Emma!
I have been paid back ON THE WHOLE for writing somewhat spoiled diary entries. Once when I was about 4 I wrote about me being upset because I couldn't find the TV show I wanted... SO SPOILED.
(Now stuff like that doesn't happen anymore because I REALLY rarely watch TV.)

I almost hoard a pretty long list of things:
-books
-things with cats
-paints (this is BY FAR the worst)
-pretty paper
-lots of little trinkets + such.
Oh, and I'm a pack rat, but I'm not sure that counts....
4/13/12 responder
Oh dear. I just came across a particularly horrid diary entry. Here it is.
'Me and my dad are going to Fairway. (I prefer Whole Foods.) He just called the car.'

Forgive me! I was only 6!
4/13/12 responder
I don't think that's too bad if you were 6! A lot of 6-year-olds write that way, I'm sure if I'd kept a diary at 6 most of the entires would've been exactly like that one.
4/16/12 responder
My diary entries at 6 were AWFUL. "Mom's cooking supper. I'm just standing here. BYE!" But good for a laugh, LOL!
4/16/12 responder
I never really wrote a consistent diary...certainly not every day! I have maybe one diary entry from every few years, but that's it. I love your diary entries though, that's hilarious!
4/16/12 responder
Oh gosh, I'm so glad you think this one is the funniest yet! And I think it's really funny you had similar diary entries as Chapel. What a cool list of things to hoard, as well! Since you said that paints are the worst, how many of those do you have?
4/16/12 responder

oh, btw, that is a neat new intro to chapel page you made Miss Emma.
4/13/12 responder
yes, it's very new...
4/14/12 responder
Yeah, I like it!!!!
4/14/12 responder
Oh, I'm glad you like it too!
4/16/12 responder
New in a good way or in a bad way?
4/16/12 responder
I mean, it's very interesting for an intro! I'm a little confused by the whole change, I don't know how to explain it... great job though!
4/17/12 responder
Oh, okay...
4/18/12 responder
Oh I'm glad you like it! That's really good feedback, thank you!
4/16/12 responder

Oh my GAWD! Hilarity, once again ;)
4/13/12 responder
Do you get tired of typing Harry Potter PWNS ALL as your nickname every time? I would probably get frustrated doing it like, twice, and change my name to an abbrievation....HPPWNSALL?
Sorry, I'm soo bored and just commenting randomly.... :)
4/14/12 responder
yeah, I thought about that too.. you know, I just am giving a suggestion but you know you could always change Harry Potter into HP... whatever you choose, we'll still be happy :)
4/15/12 responder
She uses HP sometimes...even if she does switch, we'll still know it's her of course!
4/16/12 responder
Oh my god I love that we're discussing my name X3
but actually, it's not TOOOOOOO hard to type Harry Potter....I make an effort to give Mr. Potter the most honor as possible XD
But yes, on Emma's tumblr, I use HPPWNSALL as my ask sign off so she knows it's me, as I don't have a tumblr.
SO YEAH
4/16/12 responder
Omg I put an A Very Potter Musical homemade Dark Mark on my arm today X3
Comment if you actually know what the Hufflepuff i'm talking about :D
Oh, and this nickname is an A Very Potter Sequel reference lol XDDDD
4/16/12 responder
Oh my gosh, of course I know A Very Potter Musical! It's very popular in my homeschooling group, so they showed it to me once. HARRY FREAKIN' POTTER....Anyways, yes, AVPM and AVPS are great!
4/16/12 responder
Yup, that's why I mentioned you use it sometimes! ALSO I think you'll be very interested to know -- now that Pottermore is open to the general public, I finally went and got an account. I'm a Ravenclaw, as I expected (quirky and intellectual is a perfect description of me, so it fits)! What house are you?
4/16/12 responder
Ooh, yay! I got an account during the Beta early access, so I've had one for a while. Actually, the first time I had an account, I was in Hufflepuff because I just, like, chose a cure for disease overa book. I mean, REALLY
So I stole my friend-who's-not-really-interested-in-HP-but-I-made-her-get-an-early-access-account-anyway's account, and then I GOT RAVENCLAW YAY
You should be my frienddddd!!!!
4/17/12 responder
wait, just wondering, how do you know which house you're in?
4/17/12 responder
There's a test (made by JK Rowling herself I think) which uses various questions to figure out your character and then places you in a house according to your answers! I knew I would be Ravenclaw, so it totally fits.
4/17/12 responder
cool! speaking of her... I heard on the news that she was making a new HP encyclopedia!
4/17/12 responder
Yeah, I heard that too! Did you see er new website???? They updated it for her upcoming book, The Casual Vacancy. It's for adults though... >:(
4/17/12 responder
Oh, I haven't heard about that one! Too bad it's for adults.. |:P
4/17/12 responder
I know, right????
4/17/12 responder
You guys should probably still be able to read it. I'm going to read it even though it's for adults...heck, I've been reading "adult" books since fourth grade. If there are any inappropriate scenes or something, it's super easy to skip those!
4/18/12 responder
Yeah, you're right, I wonder if she does get bored! Actually, I think the site is meant to have a cookie in it where it remembers your nickname so you don't have to keep typing it each time...doesn't it do that for you?
4/16/12 responder
Oh gosh, I'm so glad you like it! I'm really flattered that that's the response you have to my comics.
4/16/12 responder

The show Hoarders always makes me think of the creatures from Labyrinth that wear all of their possessions on their backs
4/13/12 responder
i remember them when i went to see that movie in the theator.....

dang it, i guess that carbon dates the both of us. ><
4/13/12 responder
Oh, is it an old movie? And it doesn't "carbon date" you, Taxil!
4/16/12 responder
yes it was. and i don't want to reveal any hints to my real age just yet. ^^;;;;
4/17/12 responder
I've never seen the show Hoarders, actually, or Labyrinth! I can kind of guess what Hoarders is about, but what's Labyrinth?
4/16/12 responder
Only the best musical muppet movie with David Bowie and goblins of all time. From the same era as The Dark Crystal.
4/16/12 responder
"Musical muppet movie with David Bowie and goblins" okay, just going by that description alone, I'm DEFINITELY going to have to watch it!
4/16/12 responder
That is a close discription of it. but i should also add that it is a bit of a mind bender of a movie and it has it's dark points. just beware of the oubliette.
4/18/12 responder

I don't think Chapel SHOULD give away ANY of her hats...
4/13/12 responder
Yes I totally agree with you!! They give her character..
4/13/12 responder
I know!
4/14/12 responder
although I kind of have to admit that that square-shaped hat is a little odd...
4/16/12 responder
that and it's HUGE.
4/16/12 responder
Yep, I wonder if it actually fits...
4/16/12 responder
Hmm, you're right, I wonder!
4/16/12 responder
only one way to find out.
4/17/12 responder
Yeah! wait what? :P
4/18/12 responder
People do wear hats that large though! Looking at that next to Chapel's head, it's not even that big.
4/16/12 responder
It's a derby hat, based off actual hats that people wear! Crazy, right?
4/16/12 responder
Yeah, actually, Chapel's hats are one of my favorite attributes of hers. They make her so stylish!
4/16/12 responder
Oh you don't think so? I guess it'll be you and Chapel vs. Chapel's dad then!
4/16/12 responder
Yeah! Anyone want to side with me? >:)
4/18/12 responder

(holds up sign) are you sure you want to know what i collect?

/人◕‿‿◕人\
4/13/12 responder
Oh no, let's not start this again...
4/16/12 responder
it's back! O_o

persistent little bugger isn't it?
4/17/12 responder

I hoard books
Yarin 4/13/12 responder
Me too, actually! What kinds of books do you hoard?
4/16/12 responder

At least Chapel's hoarding something she loves! LOL!

I collect a lot of things, but luckily I've never gotten to the point of hoarding...

On a side note, I love Chapel's quilt, I'd love to have one like that for my own bed! :P
4/13/12 responder
Oh, I collect a lot of things too! What are your favorite things to collect? Mine are mostly books and art supplies, along with antique trinkets. And yeah, isn't Chapel's quilt great? I'd love to have one like that too, especially since pink and green is my favorite color combination!
4/16/12 responder
By the way, do you still subscribe to Stone Soup? I know the age limit for submissions is up to 13, but I wasn't sure if you could subscribe after that.
4/16/12 responder
Yeah, I still subscribe. Of course you can subscribe after age 13! They wouldn't want to limit their paying subscribers to only preteens, I don't think! I haven't been reading it much lately, but I still do get it every month! How about you?
4/16/12 responder
I've never subscribed, but I might be able to pretty soon. I've just enjoyed the online stories for several years, haha.
4/16/12 responder
Oh, I see! Is that how you found out that my work was in Stone Soup? They posted that video I did with a link to Chapel, so that must be how, right?
4/17/12 responder
My story Ghost Horse was in the same issue as Seventeen Across, and then I recognized your name in that video. That's how I was led here!
4/17/12 responder
OH, right! I totally forgot you mentioned that to me months ago. I always remember Ghost Horse, what a good story!
4/18/12 responder
Thanks! What was your first story in StoneSoup?
4/18/12 responder
I collect stickers and bookmarks, just for the fun of it. Horse models/figurines are my personal favorite (and most abundant) collectibles... and I have a lot of books too!
4/16/12 responder
Oh, what cool things to collect! I used to have friends who collected horse figures, but I was never really interested in it...I was much more interested in dinosaurs! Stickers are really fun too, I still have a couple sheets saved that my friend bought me back from Japan YEARS ago...
4/16/12 responder

I sort of collect socks.I have two large baskets reserved for clean ones and even then I have a storage problem. I'm so weird.
4/13/12 responder
I don't think that's too weird! My best friend used to collect socks. Plus, I find that interesting more than weird! What's your favorite sock out of your collection? Can you even pick one?
4/16/12 responder
My favourite sock is one of a kind (I lost it's pair)and it has bright pink and lime green checks and goes up to my knee.
6/1/12 responder

The truth is painful isn't dear chapel? (evil grin)

i do collect some things from time to time, but i have not reached that level of otaku-ness that chapel seems to have about hats.
4/13/12 responder
What do you collect, Taxil? And yeah, if Chapel ever got a business card for herself, it would probably say "Chapel Smith: Hat Otaku!"
4/16/12 responder
i collected comic books, books of all kinds, toys, games of all types, friends, enemies, and memories of my my adventures.

well the last three i still collect, the others, not so much these days.
4/17/12 responder
I can't imagine you'd have any enemies, Taxil, you're such a sweet person!
4/18/12 responder
In the days of my youth, i wasn't such... a nice man. but years have passed and i would like to think i have become a better man sense then. I had came to God and Jesus. I now have a spot where i finial have peace inside me. In doing so, i have aligned myself against some very bad people. But do not worry Miss Emma, i can defend myself if it comes down to that. I just hope it will not come to that point.

I also should add, I am NOT with out a temper of my own. If someone goes after someone or something that i love and/or care for, i will defend my friends and loved one to the last bit of strength i have!
4/18/12 responder
wow! that last part is really sweet! :')
4/18/12 responder
it is also very true Miss L.S.P. ....and i have had to use force before. I am willing to do so again if that is what it takes. I might be old and not in prime, but i can still fight.
4/18/12 responder

I forgot to say goodnight to you.
